WALTON PRIORY STUDENTS AT BOXING AWARDS - JULY 2010

Preliminary Non Contact Boxing Awards at Walton Priory Middle School presented by Female World Boxing Champion Lyndsey Scragg. The pupils have been attending Boxing sessions with qualified coaches including Andy Whitehall qualified ABAE ( Amateur Boxing Association of England ). Pupils are now going onto working towards their Silver award. The project is an excellent example of the what can be achieved when we work in collaboration with other organisations; in this case Community and Learning Partnership and The Right Stuff Boxing club.
BELARUSIAN VISIT AT WALTON PRIORY - JUNE 2010

For the 17th Year in succession, the Ashbourne & Uttoxeter Chernobyl Children Lifeline Charity Link have invited twelve children from radiation- ridden Belarus to spend one month in our local area. This ‘Holiday of a life time’ gives a huge boost to their immune systems and has significant long lasting affects on their ability to cope with the levels of radiation that they face each and every day back home. During their stay with local families they visit places such as JCB, Alton Towers, cycling events, BBQ’s and plenty of laughter at various parties provided by local groups.

LEARNING COOKERY SKILLS AT WALTON PRIORY

Working together with a local chef Paul Wood (Owner Chef of the Greyhound@Yarlet) and his team, pupils, parents and grandparents have been learning some cookery skills recently at Walton Priory Middle School.
Mrs Nikki Gilman (Deputy Head) said “This is the fourth time we have run this club and every time it has proved to be a big success. Feedback from adults and children has been very positive and each time the group has developed as a team over the six week period”.
OOH LA LA - FRENCH DIGNITARIES SAY 'BONJOUR' TO WALTON PRIORY PUPILS

Walton Priory pupils recently enjoyed a visit from Madame and Monsieur Fournier from France. Mr Marc Fournier is the vice-mayor of Aix-en-Othe, a town in Burgundy, famous for its white wine ‘Chablis’.
French teacher, Mr Jamel Kadri, said “The children spent the morning learning about life in a French town and about the duties carried out by Monsieur Fournier”. Our French visitors were extremely impressed with the children and their understanding of the French language.
P.C. KATE SCOTT VISITS WALTON PRIORY
Year 8 pupils were recently visited by P.C. Kate Scott, the Community Police Officer who talked to the pupils about the Criminal Justice System for their current Citizenship module ‘Crime and Justice’
WALTON PRIORY STEM CLUB MEMBERS VISIT THE BIG BANG FAIR

Recently members of Walton Priory’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Club visited the Big Bang Fair in Manchester.
The children met presenters from the BBC’s Bang Goes the Theory and attended a demonstration by scientists from Salford University. They took part in practical activities led by The Royal Institute and Rolls Royce.
The aim of the event was to stimulate and encourage young people to take up careers in STEM.

YEAR 8 PUPIL SARAH NORBURY WINS SSCO FEMALE SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR
Sarah Norbury year 8 pupil who recently won the Stafford and Stone Schools Partnership Female Sports Personality of the Year. Sarah is the British Junior Ladies Sailing Champion and regularly competes as part of the British Sailing Team. Sarah recently returned from competition in Poland. As part of the National Squad, Sarah has sailed her Optomist both days most weekends throughout the Winter months in preparation for this season’s events. Sailing is the most successful Olympic sport in this country and Great Britain is the world’s top Olympic nation. The Optomist dinghy is the leading internationally recognised sailing boat for children under 16 and is a key part of the Royal Yachting Association’s Junior Programme.
WALTON PRIORY STUDENTS AT UKMT NATIONAL FINALS IN LONDON

The maths challenge team consisted of Jonathan Chambers Chloe Ellerton, Sam Handley & Declan Wardell, and all year 8 pupils.
The Team of four were winners of the Regional Finals and had an opportunity to compete with 80 other state and independent schools with pupils from year 8 & 9 across the UK in the final, at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London.
The day started with a poster competition on ‘Quadrilaterals’ on which they had prepared in the weeks leading up to the day.
The main competition consisted of 4 rounds.
- a group problem solving round
- a cross number puzzle where half the team had the down clues and the other half had the across clues but they weren’t allowed to talk to each other!
- a group circus round where they had a chance to gain bonus points for speed and accuracy against another school
- and finally the rapid relay round which requires you to be able to do maths and run up and down the room with your answers avoiding the other contests also running at speed!
After a very early start to the day, hours of mathematical thinking the Walton Priory team were placed 51st out of the 1450 schools who entered the competition originally which was a fantastic achievement and we are extremely proud of the them.
PUPILS FROM WALTON PRIORY WIN UK MATHS CHALLENGE

Four pupils from Walton Priory Middle School have come first in the UK Mathematics Trust Team Maths Challenge which was recently held at Keele University. The aim of the competition is to promote mathematical dexterity, team working and communication skills for Year 8 and Year 9 pupils. The team, who consisted of Chloe Ellerton, Declan Wardell, Sam Handley and Jonathan Chambers now have the opportunity to compete in the National Final to be held in London in June.
WALTON PRIORY STUDENTS WIN UNIVERSITY CHALLANGE

On Friday 23rd April, four year 8 students from Walton Priory Middle School took part in the Salters’ Festival of Chemistry at Keele University. They competed against 15 other schools in the area, spending the day working in the chemistry labs. The day included two challenges where the pupils had to work in teams and Walton Priory were the overall winners of the University Challenge.

EASTER ASSEMBLY AT WALTON PRIORY - APRIL 2010

Every year at Walton Priory we hold a special Easter Assembly during the last day of term. We ask the children to donate flowers and nominate someone special to receive a bouquet; it can be someone who has been ill, people who help us or just a ‘Thank you’. The assembly is always well supported and as you can see from the photograph the flowers we received and sent out were fabulous!

FUNDRAISING FOR HAITI - February 2010
Pupils from Walton Priory Middle decided to organise a variety of fundraising activities after they learned about the devastating earthquake earlier this year. The children organised various activities to raise money including a sponsored silence and non uniform days. The proceeds were donated to Rotary's Shelter box appeal.

YEAR 7 FUNDRAISING - December 2009

WALTON PRIORY MIDDLE SCHOOL TABLE TENNIS TEAM

Competed against 7 other teams from within the Stafford and Stone Sports Partnership and finished joint under 13 table tennis champions. WALTON PRIORY PUPILS AND THE COMMUNITY TAKE PART IN ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL CHARITY EVENT IN AID OF KATHARINE HOUSE HOSPICE - DECEMBER 2010

Congratulations to all those who took part in the 5mile Winter walk at Shugborough on Sunday 5th December. Over 250 people took part; 31 of which were Walton Priory pupils and family. Katharine House raised more than £10,000!!!
LEST WE FORGET - NOVEMBER 2010

Recently at Walton priory Middle School the pupils and staff held a moving commemorative assembly as part of their ‘Lest we Forget Week.’ Members of the British Legion were invited to the assembly and then stayed on afterwards for refreshments and to chat to the pupils about their wartime experiences and the work they do for ex-servicemen and women. Pupils and staff who are members of the scouting and guiding association were encouraged to wear their uniforms.
OPERATION CHRISTMAS AT WALTON PRIORY MIDDLE SCHOOL - NOVEMBER 2010

Pupils at Walton Priory Middle school have been running Operation Christmas – co-ordinated by Samaritan’s Purse (international relief) which is the world’s largest children’s Christmas project. Last year, almost 1.2 million shoeboxes were sent to children in some of the toughest parts of the world.
The appeal has been run under the heading of ‘Give Christmas Away’ and children, parents, friends and staff have put together in excess of 160 boxes.
‘This is a chance to give without receiving anything back but the knowledge that we have made a child smile. We are very proud of how our community has responded.’ Nikki Gilman (Deputy Head).
WALTON PRIORY MIDDLE SCHOOL PUPILS TAKE PART IN RAISING MONEY FOR CATHARINE HOUSE HOSPICE - OCTOBER 2010

This took place on Sunday the 10th October at Sandon Hall in aid if the Katharine House Hospice.
Five girls in year 8 who represent the girls active committe had the task to get as many young girls as active as possible form Walton Priory. 23 pupils from Walton Priory Middle School took part in the event which was fantastic! They joined up with other pupils from stafford and stone to raise funds for a well deserved charity.
EUROPEAN DAY AT WALTON PRIORY - SEPTEMBER 2010

During the recent ‘European Day’ at Walton Priory Middle School the staff and pupils enjoyed serving and buying food from a French Café which was run by Year 8 girls. The food for sale included croissants and brioche.
Throughout the day each teacher greeted their class in a different language so by the end of the day the children had learned to say hello in at least 6 different languages.
At lunchtime the catering staff served up delicious Italian and Spanish meal.
Mr Jamel Kadri – French teacher said “The aim of the day was to stimulate and enhance the Language curriculum and provide an opportunity for the pupils and staff to practice their foreign accents.”
AUTHORS VISIT WALTON PRIORY DURING BOOK WEEK - SEPTEMBER 2010

Pupils at Walton Priory enjoyed a festive end to their Book Week by coming to school dressed as characters from literature. The day opened with a parade and prize giving for the best costumes. Children could spend their day dressed as a character from literature. Approximately three quarters of the children came in costume. The annual celebration comes at the end of a week where reading is highlighted. Activities included visits by authors, Ian Billings, Ann Evans and Malcolm Rose, a book fair and additional class based reading activities.
